Yohannes is an experienced trial lawyer who has built his career advocating for clients in their most critical moments. Originally from California, he began his legal career at the Contra Costa County Public Defender’s Office, where he served as a law clerk, a death penalty clerk, and later as a misdemeanor attorney. Throughout his tenure at the office, he handled over a hundred cases at a time, worked on matters ranging from low-level misdemeanors to death penalty felonies. Yohannes has first-chaired multiple jury trials and argued countless pre-trial evidentiary motions.
After his service as a public defender, Yohannes returned to his alma mater, the University of San Francisco School of Law, as an Assistant Professor & Supervising Attorney in the Racial Justice Clinic. There, he partnered with defense attorneys across California to help implement the California Racial Justice Act, landmark legislation designed to combat racial bias in criminal proceedings.
Yohannes also has extensive experience in civil and probate litigation. At Erskine Law Group, he represented General Motors in warranty defect cases across the state, appearing in courtrooms daily to argue motions and negotiate cases with opposing counsel. Most recently, at De Vries Law PC, he represented fiduciaries often in contested and complex probate matters — working to protect elders and other vulnerable individuals from abuse.
Now residing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with his wife and newborn daughter, Yohannes serves as Of Counsel to Berger Law. He is admitted to practice in California and is awaiting admission to the Michigan bar. At Berger Law, Yohannes brings the same tenacity and strategic advocacy he displayed in California courtrooms, combining meticulous preparation with a deep commitment to his clients’ rights. Yohannes is dedicated to guiding clients through complex legal challenges with client-centered, compassionate, and zealous representation.
